Compact and versatile for street and travel

In addition to the 70-300mm f4-5.6, Fujifilm continues to expand its XF line of lenses for its APS-C mirrorless cameras, with a new version of the 27mm F2.8. The XF27mmF2.8 R WR will be available at the end of March 2021, features weather sealing, is equipped with a aperture ring and a new dome lens hood.

It is crucial to distinguish between the old model, the XF 27mm F2.8 (which I’ve used extensively for my street photos), and the new XF 27mm F2.8 R WR. Be cautious not to mistakenly purchase the old model at the price of the new one, as observed on some websites. From the outset, the acronym ‘WR’ indicates that this new XF 27mm F2.8 offers weather-resistant construction, with seven seals protecting it from splashing water and dust, enabling it to operate in temperatures as low as -10°C.

However, the presence of the WR acronym denotes much more several notable internal and external upgrades. The new XF 27mm F2.8 R WR has indeed a diaphragm ring with an A position allowing automatic opening, while the previous version had no aperture ring. Only the number 27 appeared on the rear detent. This old model is suitable for Fuji hybrids of the XA series (3/5/7) and for all models that have a mode dial, allowing aperture adjustment directly from the body with aperture adjustment from the camera and not from the lens.

In contrast, the new version is perfectly suited to Fuji Xs without a mode dial (à la Leica) such as the new X-E4 and of course the X-T 1/2/3/4 and X-Pro. The old 27mm without diaphragm ring is very difficult to control on these models. Also the new one is a surprisingly compact domed lens hood (LHCP-27), delivered as standard and purchased separately for the old XF27.

Internally, while the optical formula still comprises 7 lenses divided into 5 groups, Fujifilm has introduced a central aspherical element to better reduce distortions. Autofocus allows a minimum focus of 34 cm. The dimensions remain the same (2.3 cm high), 39 mm filter. The weight increases slightly to 84g (78g on the old model). The angle of view is equivalent to a 41mm lens in 24×36 (55.5 °). Available at the end of March for € 449.
