How it works ?

This tool analyzes images to detect if they were created by artificial intelligence by examining several aspects. It studies, among other things, textures to identify patterns that are too regular or artificial.
This detector does not use AI neural networks or deep learning to analyze images. Instead, it is the first to employ an integrated multi-metric approach, adaptive weighting, advanced bokeh analysis, and offers fast processing thanks to the Sharp library.
What is particularly innovative is the integration of numerous analysis techniques into a single pipeline, with adjustments based on image size, metadata, and many other contextual factors. Unlike some solutions that rely solely on neural networks or simple pixel analysis, this combined approach provides greater robustness against the rapid evolution of AI-generated image technologies.
It analyzes edges and transitions between colors, as natural images generally have more varied and organic edges. The software also checks the image metadata – their absence is often an indicator of AI-generated images, while their presence (such as camera device information, focal length, ISO) suggests an authentic photo.
It therefore gives a bonus to images that have complete metadata.
It examines visual artifacts, textures, repetitive patterns, artificial blur and symmetry typical of AI-generated images. All these factors are combined with different weights to produce a final score indicating the probability that the image is artificial.

Interpretation Guidelines

The final score calculated is presented on a scale from 0 to 100, where a higher score indicates a higher likelihood that the image was generated by AI.

  • 0-35: Likely a natural photo
  • 35-70: Ambiguous result, possibility of AI alterations (perform a reverse image search to find its origin)
  • 70-100: High probability of AI-generated image

High scores are more reliable for entire high-definition images than for heavily cropped or compressed images.

The presence of camera metadata is generally a good indicator of a natural photo.

Real Photo Inspector is a tool for assistance, not an absolute truth. Image generation technology evolves rapidly. Based on my latest tests, the false positive rate was below 20%. If in doubt, feel free to confirm the results with another detector!
