About this big cat : The lynx hunts on the lookout at dusk, avoiding too much exposure during the day, during which it prefers to hide and sleep, groom itself or scan its territory. The biggest preys, eaten in several days, are hidden under leaves. While its discretion and excellent hearing allow the lynx to surprise its prey, its daytime visual acuity is no better than that of humans.
Hunted for its fur or to protect domestic animals, although these attacks are rare, the lynx disappeared from France at the beginning of the 20th century. It returned naturally to the Jura and the French Alps in the 1970s and was reintroduced to the Vosges in 1983. Low numbers, estimated at 200 individuals, and a fragmented territory make populations vulnerable, as do poaching and collisions.
